“Too Much Heaven”, The Bee Gees’ No1 hit from 1978, and one of the Gibb brothers’ most dazzling melodies, gets the full boyband treatment here. Teenage heartthrobs US5 sound slick and sweet on lead vocals, with Robin Gibb providing a melancholy touch to a recording designed to strike gold over the holiday season. The Gibb brothers donated the publishing rights of “Too Much Heaven” to UNICEF in 1979 and that gift is still active today. Robin Gibb also appears in the video with US5, which was filmed in Berlin.

“Grief Never Grows Old” was the official song in Britain raising funds for the Indian Ocean Disasters. Robin contributed a delicately sung verse to this Steve Levine production that also featured his brother Barry Gibb, Brian Wilson, Steve Winwood and Russell Watson amongst others. Robin made a number of television appearances in support of the single, which reached #4 in the British charts.

In July 1986, the young Swedish songstress Carola issued an album, which was produced by Maurice Gibb. Robin Gibb co-wrote all 10 songs on the album, which was entitled “Runaway”, and he also sang backing vocals. The set’s first single “The Runaway” topped the charts in Sweden. A second single, the ballad “Brand New Heart” was also taken from the album,which, despite not seeing an international release, was a big hit in Scandinavia, achieving platinum sales status.

Robin and Bee Gees band member Blue Weaver wrote and produced an album for soul singer Jimmy Ruffin in late 1979, called “Sunrise”. “Hold On (To My Love)” was released as a single and reached number 7 in the UK and number 10 in the US charts in March 1980.

In 1978 Robin participated in the recording of the “Sesame Street Fever” album on which he shared vocals with Grover, Ernie, the Cookie Monster, and his children Spencer and Melissa. “Trash” was released as a single and remains a much sought novelty favourite. The album went gold within months and none other than Big Bird presented Robin with the award.
